What is ACCESS?
The Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kongs (CUHK) has an evaluation system that is referred to by the acronym ACCESS (Assessing Curricula, Courses Evaluations Students System). Part of ACCESS includes a bank of 12,000 MCQs that were composed by faculty members at the University of Alberta (UA) and at CUHK. This bank is conveniently stored, retrieved, managed, updated, and printed via a tailored Windows based software program that CUHK developed.
Classifying MCQs for storage and search.
MCQs are classified by relevant descriptive parameters useful in test blueprinting. Test committees or individuals can select items from the bank on the basis of the items ID or on the bases of the items content and/or psychometric properties. Search criteria include discipline (specialty and special topics), system, etiology, patient focus (infant, pediatric, adult and geriatric), number of times the item was previously used, year of last use, difficulty levels, and point biserial coefficients. These criteria were originally developed by the UA and then expanded by the CUHK.
This program also includes features for updating the items database and statistics, ensuring security, and facilitating reviews by instructors and test committees.
Printing
Retrieved items can be easily sorted so that they can be printed in the desired sequence for a test. Insertion of graphics or pictures, and use of different fonts, point sizes, bold, italics, underlining, Superscript and Subscript print features are also available. Printing of selected items is done in form of a finalized test booklet (with a cover page), ready for use in a course setting.
Tailoring program.
The ACCESS computer software requires availability of Microsoft Visual FoxPro and Word on a Windows 95/98 platform.
The ACCESSs MCQ storage and retrieval program is regarded useful at CUHK, and it is well utilized for purposes of formative and summative evaluations of medical students. Where and when possible, CUHK well commit to revising the ACCESS software in order to meet the needs of additional schools that may also wish to participate in a shared item bank among medical schools.
